How do you know if you sold your soul

This question used to intrigue me when I was a child because I was told a story at Sunday school about a boy who sold his soul but when I asked the question how would you know if you have sold your soul ? the teacher just giggled and said "oh you would know".
Do you have to make a deal with the devil himself or is this a saying about how you live your life in general?

You can not accidentally sell your soul. It is a conscious decision when presented that a person makes. The process: a person has a deep desire for something or the person has a talent of some sort. This person is generally approached by a satanist or other pagan figure who befriends them. The malevolent figure then slowly convinces the unwitting individual to attend an event with them. At the event, the witless one is usually offered a drink to relax them. They are then stirred up about those deep desires and they are presented to important people who will make those desires come to pass. These people are willing and ready to advance you the money, put your name out there, promote you in business etc. But, before they do, you must enter into a contract. This contract is tangible and requires you to sign it with. It is, in essence, a promissory note. They will set you in the positon to get your dream and at the end of your life, you will make Satan your God.

I don't believe in the devil AT ALL, but the phrase generally means that someone compromises sound values and a "moral compass" in favor of getting something (like money) in return.  It doesn't have to be money, though.  It could be something like giving up what is sound and important to one for something like the approval of a friend or a job.

I think a person has to feel as if he has a "soul" in the first place in order to notice he's compromised for a misguided value or misguided idea of what is important in life.  I think people who have a solid sense of self and "core" are the ones who feel as if they have a "soul".

The Sunday-school teacher probably took the easy way out of answering because his/her answer was right and simple:  If a person has compromised his "soul" or else has had his "soul" co-opted and/or compromised by the successful interference of, or failure of, someone else; that person not only knows, but can live in grief and sorrow that "scream for attention" until what is important to that person and his/her "soul" is somehow returned (if it even can be).

On the other hand, the person who is willing to pay some high prices for not "selling his/her soul" gets to have something in his life and sense of self that something no "soul-seller" or "soul-robber" will never have.

The devil does exist in my opinion but I agree that it is the act of going against your own morals and doing the "wrong" to get what you desire. I also believe that the contract is not a written one (In all Cases) and is mostly verbal. Our words are full of power! Our tongue holds the power of Life and Death in it.

Easy, you keep a copy of the receipt and be sure the original has been stamped by a notary public.

If after you sign a legal document there are avenues to protecting your rights. Lucifer may not be the most trustworthy of customers and he may even consider himself a first-rate attorney in his spare time, but I dare say not even the devil can bullshit his way to a win in Judge Judy's court. And one embarrassment in Judge Judy's court will, inevitably, bring him under scrutiny in his circle of professional contacts. The public humiliation alone may serve as a message to others to think twice before entering a contract with any unreliable business owner.

Of course, in my faith we don't believe in "the devil". But I'd never sign away my soul to Loki or anyone for that matter either. But interesting question, nonetheless smile

You can't sell your soul, simply because Satan, the devil or Lucifer which ever you prefer to call him doesn't care about human souls. He basically destroys souls, he doesn't buy them. That's just an old saying, that has no real truth behind it.

I beg to differ... All Satan cares about IS the human soul. His aim is to capture souls and drag them to Hell with him. He buys them in the sense that you promise your soul to him in exchange for fame, fortune, or power.

First, you have to know what a soul is. And you have to know what the devil (recipient of the soul) is.

To me, soul is the immortal, true self (child of God) within.

So, selling your soul would be to sell yourself into bondage. Why would anyone do that?

The devil? My take on it is that the devil is ego -- the physical, false self through which we interact with the world.

In a very real sense, we have all sold our selves to our egos. That's why God created the rescue mission -- Homo sapiens, civilization, religion, salvation.

Souls are not immortal - that is why Jesus Christ offers Salvation of the Soul.

As a Christian, I do not agree that you would know that you had "sold your soul." You might, but only if you were aware of spiritual matters and therefore aware of the contract into which you were entering. If you choose evil not believing, and perhaps because you do not believe, in a soul, then you would not be aware of entering into the bondage that exists when your soul is no longer your own, until the day of judgement. I do believe the soul can be sold, or else Jesus would not be able to ransom it. However, I also believe that all sales are final. Once you have chosen your path and the contract is officially signed, there is no going back. Therefore, there are two types of people who belong to the devil: those who willingly sold their souls and those whose souls were never ransomed.

Technically a persons build is energy, so of course a persons soul would be a source of energy, maybe memories tied to experiences in life would decide a certain caliber about it. Point being, that if you sign your soul over to the devil, I doubt he would get it that second. The longer a person lives the better their soul gets, sometimes, so why would he take it then? Most likely would take it at the end. I am guessing. Guess that gives a person a good amount of time to get it back.

Some people do give them selves up to be slaves of the devil but the devil himself doesn't own his own soul so it's a bit dumb to try to sell what isn't yours. U have to choose for yourself to be good or evil, right or wrong. Even the devil can't influence that. You can normally tell by the way u feel if u do good or evil acts but we soon learn to block out or ignore these feelings, Ultimately all things belong to the creator of it, so all things we know belong to the creator..... When u sell ur soul where does it go? How do they take it out... No one truly even knows where or what it is so it can't be taken... But.... what u can do is choose to be evil and walk in darkness. Even an evil person has to choose who they're evil to.. They're not just evil to anyone and everyone.(why?) U can't give up ur soul until death, but you can allow you're self to become possessed by negative thinking in all it's forms worst if u do it without putting up a fight, instead encouraging it and seeding it within yourself, because that's a sure sign that ur a slave... a robot... Lost.... Trust me I know... But there is hope for those who lack understanding. It's an attractive prospect to have all u can eat all day everyday for the rest of ur life but all things on earth have the same degree of good and bad. Fact. For every up there's a down the only constant factor is day & night but all things are measured equally, in balance, Fact. The only imbalance Is human emotions and choices & actions, anyway back to the point, instead of taking the soul (cos they can't) lol they distribute microchips to those men who fear poverty and lack faith in their own ability to use their God given talent to succeed and create the comforts they want in life...  stop believing the lie that u have to sell out to make it in life just know u have the power to create the life you want just have faith in yourself and in the creator of all things whatever name u wish to call him by, (I say him because the creative projection energy is masculine in nature and not because the creator is a man) faith, love hope, family charity reproduction and good health u maintain these and everything else becomes easy.... Add meditation if u wish. Regular exercise is also fundamental to being and achieving. U dont need to walk in fear (earth laws are just so... even the devil can't change them and he knows it (when I say the devil I mean negative energy). These laws govern all we know so be wise and observe them, peace.

I did this (or thought I did at the age of 16). Now that I’ve read the Bible I can tell you that according to God’s Word you already have the devil as your father (John 8:44) so selling your soul or trying to is of no consequence. The only way to change that position is to believe in Jesus and what He did for you on a rugged cross 2,000 yrs ago. When Christ took on the sins of the world, He forgave you— In fact, He forgave all of us. The whole stands forgiven- but it’s on you to recognize and believe that. The scriptures tell us that you were bought with a price-- His blood. Once you become born again you are not your own anymore. I can give you lots of scriptures to support what I’m telling you but it’s best to find them out on your own and see for yourself what the scriptures have been saying for centuries. It’s not complicated. I assure you. Jesus Himself said that even a child can see it. We make it so incredibly complicated… because of everything we learn as we are growing up.  Being born again transforms you into a whole new creation (II Corinthians 5:17). Salvation is free; you need only believe and accept Him into your heart. The rest of your life is just living out a “Thank You” for everything He did for us. Merry Christmas!

I think it depends on how literal you perceive the phrase, or question.

I believe you can sell your soul to the devil. If I sacrifice every moral, spiritual, and caring thing I believe in for something which is selfish, or strictly for personal gratification at an-others expense, I have sold my soul to the devil. I believe everyone knows who commits such an act or comes close to crossing the line, at least anyone that has any sense of morals or conscious because it eats at you every day of your life!

In my case I would have basically told my higher power that even though I am aware of the price I will pay, that it was worth sacrificing my place with him and chosen an afterlife in hell instead.

    Great question!

I've done a lot of studies involving demonology, but I've also read the Bible, and studied many different cultures..  With selling your soul it does take a certain ritual in order to sell your soul for something.. In different countries they have many Gods so they make an offering to that certain deity. There seems to be no specific way in order to conjure up a demon to sell your soul usually it's not Satan himself.. But there's several different rituals most requiring blood in order to complete the circle for it to appear. Some say you sign documents, some seal with a handshake or a kiss who knows the truth. Before the demon appears you get really cold, sometimes black smoke appears out of no where, electricity flickers, or random electricity storms. But the point is you definitely know when you sell your soul when you come across a demon. You may be doing it for the better but in the end it really ends up hurting you.

It's a good question and the movie Devils Advocate is a good example of how people think they are aligning to integrity, theirs or that of what they call "God."   It's like a slight of hand, a most craftily executed game of what you think is choice and what you think is the hands of virtue.

Those who say you can't sell your soul are truly deluded and this in itself is the guise of having sold your soul without you knowing it. The psyche is indeed a mind-field of delusion.  What you think is right is as what is told to you as being right.  Yet what is right for one is not necessarily right for another.  What is fed to a person via text books is a beautiful muse to make you believe you have knowledge, yet knowledge only comes from experience - otherwise it's what you've been told is knowledge.  Unless you DO and have an experience you've not learned anything.

Whenever a person puts God as thy savior in any text - it's usually the devil's advocate at play.  Why?  Because you can only save yourself - perhaps with the guidance of spiritual teachings, but at the end of the day even truly spiritual beings can be fooled - and have been many times..  It's not enough to believe, you have to walk the talk in the every core of who you are.  A devil's advocate will teach you that someone else is going to do it for you - just believe me and all will be good.  Nonsense!

The Devil's playground is enormous, it is intelligent, it is beautifully orchestrated to make the most devoutly virtuous squirm in their trousers.  Only a fool would think otherwise.

    Yes, Executive.

Truly it's about how you live your life, and the beauty is that - to a certain extent - we all have choices. It is having what in my profession we call 'Accountability' or we could say 'personal responsibility.'

Still, if you are anything like me, the forces of ignorance as ordained by God Itself will push you - as if into darkness - before you find your way out. Read the lives of saints and mystics, and you will see that many of them went through these shadows. You and I are not unique, or better still, exempted.

So how do you know if you have sold your Soul? Simple. You are made in the image of Spirit and your Spirit (conscience) will tell you. Bear in mind that this inner voice is stronger in some than others, not that they are any more special, but either gifted through God's bounteous grace or have been praying verbally and interiorly for much longer.

There is no other way of knowing. Only the Inner Voice will tell you, and whether it does so now or in ten lifetimes, it most certainly will. Much peace.

Okay, all Faustian jokes aside.  If you sold your soul to the Devil, you would have gotten something in return.  For example, if I said that I'd sell my soul for health, wealth, and happiness, for the murder of a dozen puppies and somehow the next day I win the lottery, get a clean bill of health, and was incredibly happy - I'd be a bit suspicious.

I very much doubt, you'd get the "in person" salesperson devil (complete with horns, pitchfork, and red satin long johns).  It would also be a prerequisite that you actually believe in the devil.

In every fictional story that I can recall, there is either a contract, or a covenant, or something signed in blood to say that the person who put his soul for sale actually committed to it.

If, on the other hand, you made the "I'd sell my soul" statement and things like health, wealth, and happiness happened - and you did nothing to acknowledge the deal, I'd write it off to dumb luck.

Only Christians who feel they will need to do an accounting to St. Peter will know when they hit the afterlife - people who have other faiths don't really have to deal with that.

    How?
You will lose your sense of compassion for the weak.
You won't feel anything when you watch the news.
You will start to support things like legal infanticide.
You will not feel any pity or sympathy for refugees.
    ETC.

Most people join the Darkside without even knowing they did it.  They didn't sell their soul - they just followed the other sheep going the wrong way.

Those who have signed a pact with Satan know they did it, it was an overt act where they made an agreement with Satan for certain benefits.

Those who follow Christ, as well do it as an overt act - they choose to believe in Jesus Christ and obey the Commandments of God.

You are on one side or the other, there is no fence sitting even possible, if you are not on Christ's side, you are on the Devil's whether you know it or not.

You do not have control over your emotions, business, life, worship, marriage etc either consciously or unconsciously. You feel strange to yourself, you feel another being taking over your actions. In the dream or physical, there is a bargain in which there is an exchange, You might be short changed later on, but, at the beginning you were promised a better offer. Speeches are always coming to you either in the dreams or feeling of someone talking to you. Mirages are always seen. Ability to break off seems impossible and any attempt to go further might bring stern warnings or punishment.

It seems there's a literal and figurative way of "selling your soul." Literal would involve (I imagine) some sort of ritual or contract. Figurative would entail behaving in a way that is contrary to what is considered "normal" or "right."  But this is just one interpretation.

There is no biblical proof or discussion about selling your soul to the devil. In fact I believe that entire mode of thought came from a play over a thousand years after the bible was written.

Nobody will buy it. No- seriously, the soul is the one thing that is not for sale. Think of it as a memory chip. It stores all of your memories from all of your lifetimes. You share it all the time. That's what goes on when you're not busy surviving. The moments when you are alive, happy memories are being relived.

Humans on earth are just now beginning to access two aspects of it which were... How would I put this... Taken away when something horrible happened thousands of years ago. I've been doing all I can to stop history from repeating itself. Ive had an advantage over previous attempts to do this. That's all I'll say about that for now.

When we put money first in all decisions we make, we can feel "empty", unfulfilled, and become cash rich and soul poor.  In that way we rob ourselves by putting the material above the Spirit that is within all of us.  Soul qualities such as love, honour, trust and faith in a higher power, lead us to a stronger connection with our Spirit, a more satisfying life, and a better understanding of how the universe works.  We have to learn to put these qualities before money, hence we transform ourselves and our life.  We all have the power to attract what we lack! None of us need to rob, steal or manipulate others in order to gain whatever we are looking for.  But we have to choose that path.

To my point of view, selling your soul is more of a moral concept than an actual "pact with the devil".When you act imorally, when you harm others and do evil, when your ego reaches a pathological level (to the point of hurting all the people around you)-that's when you can say that you are "selling your soul" to the devil.

    Well for starters.
You start to become more "Evil, Sick, Twisted, Demonic," I know for a fact because I have sold my soul. I was 2 years old. back in 1992, when something happened to me. As soon as it was over with I started to see stuff in my dreams and visions, I could see the Past and the Future, And many ways I could die. Selling your soul is never the Answer. But find a better Solution and be happy you have everything In the world, But do not make the mistake I did so long ago, I did it because I was scared and something bad happened to me, and I was fooled because of the devil, And now I will go to hell and I don't blame god for my mistake and my Ignorance's. I did something wrong, and I do not plan on asking Forgiveness, because of what I did so very long ago.

That is the mistake I think Judas made--not bothering to ask for forgiveness, and live with self-loathing.  There is NO sin bad enough for God not to forgive.  If you turn to Jesus, nothing you can do will tear you from Him.  Go now.

I you are doing things you don't accept yourself. For example you think eating steak is not acceptable and you are otherwise vegetarian, but when you take part in business dinner with someone who don't want anything to do with vegetarians and then you say and do things you don't believe ( eat steak) and maybe also agree with this guy, I think that's kind of selling your soul, if you know you are doing something you don't accept in the means of gaining something.

I believe you openly choose to or get tricked and trapped. YOu see changes in your habits and environments, in the way you ca't make your decisions…NOw, mind, I didn't do it but I know some people who are definitely up to something. They look 60 today and 40 tomorrow (no make up, no trick), they have a lot of money and properties, their kids have everything though no education, no work, no ambition, everyone dies or is in dire situations around them…everything they touch, even with their tongue rots!@
Just stay way from that type that sells you and reaps you for personal interest but will see the pay day.

This is difficult as it puts in question: what are people's religious / spiritual views. If you believe in heaven and hell. It also asks us to define our boundaries of what we perceive as good and bad: What do people consider as morally correct? Although we are dictated to by socially accepted norms, what might be wrong to one person is permissible to someone else.
If we all abided by the laws that govern the common good, we would understand what it is to have gone too far therefore what it is to sell ones soul. However, some will argue that there is some level of bad that is required to understand what is good.
It will forever be a highly debatable topic.

With respect to the classical Faustian bargain, Philip  asked the following question:
"Do you have to make a deal with the devil himself or is this a saying about how you live your life in general?"
I lean toward the life-in-general hypothesis. I'd like to elaborate on that theme.
I do not believe that soul-selling is an all-or-nothing proposition. Few of us lead perfect lives. When we take ethical shortcuts, there are consequences. What goes around, comes around -- eventually.
It is possible to salami-slice our souls, to sell off various parcels of spiritual real estate. Please pardon the mixed metaphor. It is also possible to buy back some of those parcels, by making a whole-hearted effort to live an honorable life, and to be nice to people -- especially to other nice people who have not bought into our prefab worldview.
An individual religion is worthwhile to the extent that it encourages exemplary conduct. The secret handshakes, as well as the imaginary middlemen that organized religions insert between us and our Higher Power, are just window-dressing.
Living by the Golden Rule is the only thing that matters. Most people do not need JC or Moe for that. Most people, who are brought up in good families, have an innate sense of right, wrong, and fairness. This moral compass is functional MOST of the time.

The Bible says there is only one unforgivable sin. I can only think that that sin would be something like refusing the love and forgiveness of Jesus to spite yourself (and him) at the end of your cycles of life, which I believe never end. God is our father, and think of him as a loving father, a lot, LOt BEtter than even good earthly fathers, he is trying to help us all the time. He did not make provisions for the the selling of our souls, its the stuff of ancient folk tales and the Charlie Daniels Band, but I bet you knew that!
